Royal British Legion show their appreciation to engineering students

Coleg Gwent engineering students, who manufactured and auctioned 141 steel poppies raising £1,692 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal have been thanked for their support.
Community fundraiser for the Royal British Legion, Lynne Woodyatt recently visited the City of Newport Campus to present a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ to some of the staff involved in the project.
“The poppies were incredibly sought after and with the significant number of 141 being produced, representing the 141 day long Battle of the Somme, we were inundated with requests for them. We really appreciate the hard work and concerted efforts of the students to support us in raising money for the Royal British Legion,” said Lynne.
Head of School of Engineering Steve Lewis said: “The students worked so hard to get the poppies made on time and the results were fantastic. In addition, local company Swift Steel Services Ltd kindly donated the materials which meant that 100% of the proceeds went to the poppy appeal.”
Students studying carpentry, welding and paint spraying are working together again this year.
“This years’ metal poppies will be available to the general public and will be on sale at Tesco at Spytty, Newport from Tuesday 7th November on a first come first served basis costing £15 each. Following this a selection will be on sale at Asda in Pentwyn, Cardiff,” added Lynne.
